A Lot Can Happen In A Year / by Guy Mitchell

We'd like to start off by wishing you a very happy 2017!

As we catch our breath over the weekend, we're taking a moment to reflect on the events of the previous year. We worked incredibly hard, so to say that there were a just a few would be a huge understatement. Here are some of the highlights:

Liberty best of british design

We were so to meet managing director, Ed Burstell, to show him our Mayfair console tables as one of the Best Of British Design attendees. The full experience from start to finish was incredibly inspiring, and we learnt a lot from being there. Ever grateful for the opportunity, we came away with many ideas and plan to extend & develop our range of unique furniture further, with a view to going back in the future.

Portuguese adventure

In April, we made a trip to the fabulous city of Lisbon, a tile-lover's paradise, for some design inspiration, before heading over to the North near Porto, amongst the beautiful green valleys and vast forests of eucalyptus, to visit our friends at the New Terracotta factory.  All we can say right now is that there are plans for a collaboration in the pipeline, which we're excited about revealing to you as soon as we possibly can! Again, we came away with heads packed full of ideas, which we are busy putting into action right now.

Over the summer, we spent literally all of our time working on the bespoke tiles for Margot, an exclusive new Italian restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden. In total, we individually handmade over 2500 dome-shaped 3D tiles for the interior, which was designed by award-winning Fabled Studio, We were, and continue to be very proud indeed to see the many resulting photographs. This one is from Telegraph Luxury's Drinking & Dining section. You can read more about the creation of the tiles here.

festival of thrift

To be asked by the festival's organisers to facilitate a tile-making workshop as part of this innovative and unique event was just amazing. Not only was it a chance to work locally as part of a national scale event, but it made us proud to be able to celebrate the history of our home town with the medium of tiles! It was a very busy weekend with tens of thousands of visitors through the doors. You can read more about the tile-making workshop here.

The finished tiled artwork of the participants will be displayed on the grounds of Kirkleatham Museum later on this year, so we'll keep you updated on progress.

northern design festival

Our Mayfair console tables were selected to be shown as part of the Design Event MART exhibition in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, alongside some of the North of England's finest designers. It was incredible to be a part of the exhibition and to meet some inspiring people along the way. There was even talk of potential collaborations, so watch this space!

to wrap things up

We're pretty sure you'll agree that to fit all of those things around other regular commissions and workshops, while keeping up to date with the general running of the business is no mean feat. However, we managed to tie the year up nicely in time to welcome our beautiful baby daughter into the world. Best Christmas present ever.

Plans for 2017

Its business as usual here at Guy Mitchell Design and we've started as we mean to go on. By that, we mean that we've been dreaming big and have plans for a growth, which we hope to implement as soon as we possibly can.

January has a trip to the USA in store, which we're very much looking forward to. Our lips are tightly sealed about that just now, but we'll keep you updated with progress.

There are several interesting collabs on the horizon for furniture, lighting and wall tiles. All with super talented craftsmen whom we're grateful to have the pleasure of knowing.

There'll be a mixture of brand new ceramics workshops, both privately and publicly run. We look forward to meeting all participants. if you would like details of these, please contact us at info@guymitchelldesign.com

All in all, it's set to be a fantastic year! We sincerely hope that yours will be too.
